Overlanding gear and tips

Updated: Jan 18, 2024

Our type of camping is called Overlanding. We live in our rooftop tent and it's so much fun! This allows us to drive off trails and away from designated camp spots and venture off to some cool spots. We have collected functional gear over the last few years and have gotten very creative with organization and storage. Camping can be a lot of work but if you learn to take what you need and how to stay organized, you will hopefully stay stress free.

We recently went on our annual family camping trip to northern New Mexico and it was such a blast. Here are some of our gear as well as Tips and Tricks that we have learned along the way. Let me know if there something not covered here and I would love offer my advice. :)

Happy reading.

OVERLANDING GEAR

As mentioned above, we have collected our gear over the last two years. It can be pricey but there are places to buy used gear for a lot cheaper. The biggest thing to remember is make sure used gear is still functional and not damaged. We have collected our items through trial and error and have gotten real creative with how to live off the land.

THE JEEP

This is BIG BLUE. My 2014 Jeep Wrangler. We have a cage that holds our roof top tent, awning and fly fishing carrier. The fly fish carrier is from Thrustle. We got it on a discount because someone had returned it. There was nothing wrong with it at all and we got it for a fraction of the original price.

Our roof top tent is from Smittybilt and it has held up over the last few years and has many more years ahead. It's so fun sleeping up high, opening the windows and seeing the stars. Not to mention, I feel safer being up high away from wildlife. :)

The black bag on the wheel is our trash bag from Trasharoo. We put a disposable trash bag inside and use it for all our trash. Such a huge help and it secures it from squirrels, chipmunks, and other animals.

STORAGE & ORGANIZATION

The most comfortable camping chairs we've owned from GSI Outdoors.

Water jugs and FrontRunner storage containers. It's no lie Jeeps are small and don't have a lot of room, storage is key!

I organize our gear into different containers.

  1. Kitchen supplies (Paper towels, wetwipes, cooking oil, dish soap, light source, utensils, our cooking dishware, etc. Checking out my camping packing list here.

2. Food: I pack all of our canned foods, dog food, coffee, bread, etc in another container.

-Our "kitchen" set up. We scored this collapsable table from Sportsman Warehouse. It literally folds into itself and fits into a bag. It takes up as much room as a camping folding chair!

-Propane stove is a Coleman from Wal-Mart!

-Coffee percolator is from Sportsman. There is nothing like fresh brewed coffee in the mountains.

Our kitchen cabinets. :)

I was tired of pulling items in and out of our storage and I didn't want to leave them lying around our campsite so I bought a shoe organizer and used it as a kitchen cabinet. It came in handy and allowed for easy use during cooking. Only paid $6 at Target.

Our collapsible sink. I love this thing! I was using bulky buckets before and this collapses flat and has a drain plug. Scored it at Wal-Mart for $10.

Our cutting board and food prep area. This was designed specifically for Jeeps and we used it alot before we got the table. We still use it to cut and prep food since our table is taken up by our propane stove now.

Our kitchen plateware from GSI Outdoors. Everything fits perfectly in the bag. 4 plates, 4 cups, 4 bowls.

We still have any items on our bucketlist but they are more for luxury camping than a necessity (such as a solar shower lol). Until then, if you have any questions on our gear, comment below. :)
